The Situation
Like all software development, as the project grows in scope, so does the challenge of managing the source code. Using open source CVS for code management and Bugzilla for identifying defects, they became frustrated with broken builds and inability of identifying defects early in the development cycle. They considered switching to Rational’s ClearCase for code management, but after feedback from team members and associates from other companies, they realized that failed or prolonged Rational migrations were common.

The Solution
Calavista’s devEDGE was the only solution which seamlessly binds together CVS and Bugzilla. In a single 2 month period, Calavista’s devEDGE identified and blocked the introduction of 39 broken builds. This is code that would otherwise have contaminated the mainline of the code base – on average once per day – preventing every developer on their staff from completing a build in their local environment, and preventing the successful compilation of their flagship product in the dedicated build environment – delaying their Gold release significantly. Instead, each piece of broken code was identified, isolated, and referred to the offending developer to be fixed on the spot, leaving other developers to continue to code, and build, without interruption. In fact, it was only through Calavista devEDGE’s advanced reporting facilities that anyone realized what a bullet had been dodged.
